These bookmarks are a special partnership with Prologue Bookshop and proceeds from each print will go towards Streetlight Guild, a local performing arts organization right in the heart of Columbus, Ohio. The journey of illustrating the designs was quite the challenge, as drawing in an extreme linear and vertical format pushed me to think differently about my usual composition style. Thanks to digital art mediums, I was able to manipulate, cut and redraw my sketches to fit into the traditional bookmark format. Creating the concept was about creating four pieces of art that are both family friendly and general public friendly while maintaining my personal style and voice.
To balance creativity with accessibility, I focused on themes and colors that would resonate across ages and interests, adding thoughtful details that make each bookmark feel like a miniature work of art. The blues brings a sense of calm, although solemn and melancholy in mood, the drawings of the subject adds a touch of warmth and comfort which is where the yellowy-gold color comes in. Each bookmark was illustrated to be visually engaging and to invite readers (and book hoarders) of all backgrounds into an inspiring, artistic experience, whether they’re diving into a new book or revisiting an old favorite.
